Have you ever heard that too much of a good thing makes it - well, bad? Welcome to the concept behind Black Hat SEO. Black Hat SEO essentially takes the honest efforts of search engine optimization and tweaks them so that a website can see fast, short-term gain. The search engines, however, are aware of these techniques and offer swift punishment if they catch you engaging in this behavior.

Anything hidden from the visitor, in fact, is considered Black Hat SEO and poor practice. Doorway pages can be another form of Black Hat SEO that will cause your site to be banned from the search engines. Finally, another troublesome and frequent action of websites that engage in Black Hat SEO is the use of link farms, which encourages industries wholly irrelevant to the website to link to the site simply to gain the extra links pointing to their page. White Hat SEO, conversely, will encourage links from other sites if they are relevant to their website and/or can provide additional information to their visitors.
